Mangalore Dasara, also known as Kudla Dasara, is a vibrant festival celebrated in Mangalore, Karnataka, and has been observed for several centuries. Unlike the Mysore Dasara, which is royal in nature, Mangalore’s Dasara is deeply rooted in local traditions and temple festivities. The festival is primarily associated with Navaratri, the nine-night celebration dedicated to Goddess Durga.
Historically, the celebration in Mangalore gained prominence around the 17th century, when local temples like Gokarnanatheshwara, Kadri Manjunath, and Mangaladevi temples began organizing elaborate rituals, processions, and cultural events during Dasara. The highlight of the festival is the grand procession of decorated idols and tableaux, often accompanied by traditional music, dance, and folk performances.
Over time, Mangalore Dasara has evolved into a city-wide event, blending religious devotion with cultural showcases, attracting thousands of devotees and tourists. It reflects the coastal Karnataka heritage, with unique customs such as cultural competitions, yakshagana performances, and temple fairs.
